The Clever Rabbit and the Big Drum

Clever thinking can be stronger than size.

A note about this story: Many West African storytelling traditions include clever animal characters who solve problems with wit rather than strength.

In a grassy village near the forest, the animals found a giant drum.

Boom! The elephant struck it with his foot. Boom! The leopard struck it with his tail. Boom! The sound was so loud that birds flew from the trees.

“This drum belongs to the strongest animal,” said Elephant. “No,” said Leopard. “It belongs to the fastest.”

Rabbit watched quietly. “May I try?” Rabbit asked. The animals laughed. “You are too small,” said Elephant.

Rabbit smiled. “Then I will play it in a small way.” Rabbit tapped the side. Tap-tap. Then he tapped the top. Tum-tum. Then he scratched the rim. Shh-shh-shh.

Soon the drum was not just loud. It was music. The birds returned. The monkeys danced. Even Elephant swayed.

Leopard bowed his head. “The drum belongs to the one who knows how to listen.”

Rabbit grinned. “And to everyone who wants to dance.”
