The Moon Fox

Wisdom means using gifts kindly.

A note about this story: Foxes appear in many East Asian stories as magical, clever, mysterious, or wise beings.

In a bamboo forest lived a fox whose fur glowed in moonlight. Every full moon, the fox could become invisible.

At first, she used her gift to sneak extra berries. Then she used it to scare owls. Then she used it to hide from chores.

One night, she heard a child crying by the river. “I cannot find the path home,” the child said.

The fox wanted to stay invisible. But the moon whispered, “A gift grows when it is shared.”

The fox stepped into the light. Her silver fur shone like a lantern. “Follow me,” she said.

She led the child through bamboo, over stones, and back to the village. After that night, the fox still turned invisible. But only when someone needed quiet help.
