The Snow Deer's Promise

Keeping a promise matters.

A note about this story: Northern European winter tales often include forests, animals, snow, and promises kept through hardship.

In a snowy forest, a deer with white antlers found a lost mitten. Inside the mitten was a note: “Please return. It is my brother's favorite.”

The snow deer picked up the mitten gently. The wind howled. The path disappeared.

Fox said, “Leave it. No one will know.” Owl said, “Wait until spring.”

But the deer had made a promise in her heart. She walked through snowdrifts and under frozen branches.

At last, she reached a cottage with warm yellow windows. A child opened the door. “My brother's mitten!”

The snow deer bowed her head. The child tied a blue ribbon around one antler.

Every winter after that, when people saw a flash of blue in the forest, they remembered: A promise is a path you choose to follow.
