The Whale's Song

Lani's grandfather could read waves. “That one means wind,” he said. “That one means rain.” “That one means wait.”
Lani wanted to learn quickly. But the ocean did not hurry.
One evening, a whale surfaced beyond the reef and sang a long, low song. “What does it mean?” Lani asked. Grandfather closed his eyes. “It means remember.”
“Remember what?” “That the ocean is not a road. It is a relative.”
From then on, Lani greeted the waves before stepping into the canoe. She watched. She listened. She waited.
Years later, when she became a navigator, people asked how she knew the sea so well. Lani smiled. “I stopped trying to command it. I learned to listen.”
