The Day the Playground Listened

Listening helps everyone belong.

At Maple Park, the slide was fast, the swings were high, and the climbing wall was tricky. But Sam sat on the bench.

“Come play!” called the children. Sam shook his head.

The playground grew quiet. The swing chains stopped squeaking. The slide stopped shining. Even the sandbox seemed to wait.

Maya sat beside Sam. “What kind of play do you like?” she asked. Sam looked surprised. “I like building roads,” he said.

So the children brought sticks, pebbles, leaves, and bottle caps. Together they built roads through the sand, under the slide, around the swings, and over tiny bridges.

Soon everyone was playing. The playground sparkled again. It had learned something important. The best games begin by listening.
